A few things have me reflecting these days....

I have a little girl just 5 short days from her first day of Kindergarten! The past 5 1/2 years have flown by, and I can't quite believe we are to this point already.

My mom had these great little school days memory books for both my sister and I. She cleaned out all the keepsakes & mementos a few years ago when she & my dad moved, so I now have these items stored in my own closet.

I pulled it out the other day to reminisce about my own early school experience, and to share it with Meredith as we talked some more about starting school. There is room for a photograph and key info (like height, weight) for each grade, along with teacher's name, friends, and favorite subjects. I was a little shocked by how much I weighed when i started school (53 lbs, compared to my little peanut's 38!)...but I shouldn't have been...I was always a "big girl." I seriously stopped growing in about the 6th grade.

I have to say, this one surprised me. I have become a bit of an American Idol junkie in the past season or two. I never really watch the early seasons. I admit that I enjoyed some of Paula's ramblings as much as the next person, and she did manage to put a positive spin on most of her reviews. But I was pretty annoyed by all the Paula/Simon antics. They often acted quite juvenile....I don't really see Mrs. Beckham playing those games...do you???

Father's Day

So I suffer from major blog neglect! I am a great reader & commenter...just not so much the writer! We'll see if things improve...

We are off to start our Father's Day celebration a little early. Taking the kids to see UP! They have been waiting and waiting for their token jar to fill up (tokens awarded whenever they get "caught" doing something great!).

Disney is the master of the cross promotion, so we have seen all the previews to this during our normal Disney Channel viewing...we do need our daily dose of Phineas & Ferb!

Kevin and Meredith spent many, many hours creating and prepping the garden area several weeks ago...and now the temperature has finally allowed us to do the planting. Mere has been super excited about all the preparation. This is our first gardening experiment. Wish us luck!!!

I have been meaning to compose a post entailing the hundreds of items that have kept me away from blogging these past few months (not reading, just writing). I guess I thought if I had this voluminous list in print, it would somehow make up for the absence. As if those of you who post regularly have nothing else to do???

I am a great excuse maker...just ask me why I have been to the gym more than 2x since thanksgiving...i could go on. And maybe that is the connection to why I feel like I have been operating in a foggy haze since thanksgiving too...Maybe if I hauled myself back to the treadmill, I would not feel so useless. I have been without the energy to tackle any major project for a while now...but I talk a good game.

Well it is 82 degrees outside and gorgegous! The time is now to set my priorites and tackle them!

A year in review

I feel like I have been in a fog these past few months....the Holiday season was rushed in by a post thankgsgiving trip to Disney (which I have yet to post about!!!), the Christmas came and went, and little traveling, my baby girl turned 5 9I still haven't wrapped my head around that!) and I am touring school/kindergartens!

I have been meaning to do a new years post....and hey it is still January, right!...here goes...( I modified this...found this on Lelly's great blog)

1.What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before? I traveled a lot (see #5, and add a trip to Louisiana to visit parents, a few jaunts to Ohio for family, and a trip to Disney).

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I haven't made real big resolutions in many years....I hate the disappointment!

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? no

4. Did anyone close to you die? my husband's grandmother passed away...I always called her G-Kate

5. What countries did you visit? I was lucky enough to go to London, England twice with my husband on business....hopefully I can make it one more time this year! We also spent a few days in Mazatlan , Mexico for our 10th anniversary.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? dedication...to an exercise plan...and a budget!

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Nov. 4th was a biggie

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I am stumped by this...I finally joined a gym and started a basic exercise regiment.

9. What was your biggest failure? I had several home improvement plans on the agenda for 2008, and NONE were accomplished. Going back to # 8...I did get the "quick" results I expected, and didn't follow through.

10. Where did most of your money go? I wish I knew

11. What song will always remind you of 2008? Anything by the Avett Brothers...I "discovered them this year, saw them once live, and listened a lot.

12. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder?  b) thinner or fatter?  c) richer or poorer? I am about the same on all three

13. What do you wish you’d done more of? Played outside with the kids

14. What do you wish you’d done less of? watch tv...we get cozy and "veg" too much!

15. Did you fall in love in 2008? yes...after 10 years...all over again

16. What was your favorite TV program? gossip girl...and NCIS

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? no, I just don't have that in me.

18. What was the best book you read? I became completely absorbed in the Outlander series...I flew thru the first 5, and I have labored (but I still enjoy it) for over 2 months now!

19. What was your favorite film of this year? I think Juno, cute & quirky...Also loved SATC...but I didn't see very many.

20. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 33 last year....and I have no recollection of doing anything "special"...when did that happen???

21. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? I play it safe, I wear solids, and classics. I am always "dressed" and gym clothes are for the gym.

22. What kept you sane? a few great friends!

I just got one of my favorites in the mail today. I should give the Mr. a few hints, but he might be finished shopping already....hmmmm.

I love Garnet Hill. Beautiful home decor and linens, great sweaters, and fabulously comfy pajamas...here are a few favorites...

Asian Wrap Pajamas...I can't get a pic of these off the website, in the pink & green water lilies, but they are in the catalog...so cute! Ohhh, here under the robe!

This tote in the polka dots is a cute under $30 gift...I love reusable totes, and I'm ready to make a step up from the grocery store variety!

In the mean time...I need to plan the almost 5 year old's birthday party...which will be 3 days after we return, prep for the in-laws visit...they will be going with us (this is actually a good thing!)...
plan Thanksgiving dinner...because we will actually be having a meal here...about 18 hours before we leave...Oh and BTW...I'll be getting all of this done while the hubby is in JAPAN!

For all you mothers of little girls...run, don't walk to Costco. I just saw today Baby Lulu dress sets for only $18.99! These are adorable swing style dress with matching leggings...in at least 7 different designs...I was truly excited, until I saw the sign "24 month - 4T". And my little one is slowly creeping into the little girl sizes now...no more toddlers :(

Some of my favorite outfits of hers from the first year were Baby Lulus that I found at a boutique that was going out of business..I hit the jackpot, and also stocked up on bows in every size...some I think she is still wearing!

Of course I didn't think to take a picture...and I am sure they are designs that were created just for Costco...but nothing is more comfy for play & preschool than a dress with matching leggings!

I had the pleasure of accompanying my husband on a business trip a few weeks back. He spends 1-2 weeks each month with his team in London. This was my 2nd time to tag along. Yes, we have been waiting over a year to hear if there is an International Relocation assignment in our future...so far, no such luck. The timing of this trip was perfect. We were already heading to Ohio for my 15 year High School Reunion ( Great time...but small turn out). I was pretty excited because I had to miss my 10th...traveling at 37 weeks of pregnancy never a good idea. My in-laws had already planned to keep the kids for a week at their house (they beg for this periodically since all the other grand kids are right around the corner, and we are 9 hours away). I had visions of dinners out, matinee movies watched, leisurely shopping...then Kevin realized that this was a week he needed to be in London. A few thousand frequent flyer miles later, I was on a plane across the Atlantic. The down side is he works pretty long hours while he is working there, so we don't truly have much quality time together....but it is still a nice getaway! I had serous thoughts of taking a day trip to Paris one of the days that I was there...but a few things got in my way...

1. I was chicken. I am a fairly adventurous girl. I have traveled in Latin America, Africa, Europe and extensively through out the US...I even spent the night in JFK by myself when I was 21...but I just wasn't up for a day in an unfamiliar city...where I speak not one word of the language (oui?) by myself. I believe I would like my husband to accompany me on my first trip to Paris.:)
2. A few days before we departed there was a fire in the Chunnel. No one was injured, but it seriously limited access for several days. By the time I was sure that maybe I really did want to go, I could not get a morning ticket out due to the restricted schedule. sad, yes, disappointed, yes...

So I did several things that I didn't have a chance to do on my previous visit.
1. Hampton Court Palace.
As a former history teacher I am a little embarrassed to say I am actually not a huge anglophile...I can hardly keep my Tutors straight from my Stuarts. I trace a little of it back to my college days...I had my absolutely least favorite professor for Western Civ.... and then again for History of the Middle Ages (why I even took the class actually escapes me...I am sure it must have satisfied about 27 different requirements, because the subject matter surely didn't draw me in!). I do really love all things royal. I am fascinated by the lifestyles and the linage. I was immediately hooked when I read the Other Boleyn Girl...so I spent about 5 hours roaming the halls, looking into the lives of Henry the 8th and William & Mary, reading the plaques, listening to the magnificent audio guided tours. It was a rainy, dreary day (but the only one I have had in the 12 total days I have spent in England), so I was unable to explore the gardens & maze.

2. London Walks
My husband downloaded these amazing London Walks into itunes several months ago. He rarely has the time to enjoy them, unless he is staying over the weekend. I love having the freedom to live for a week completely without a schedule...so I just pick a walk located near a museum or great high street. I loved the Southbank tour and the Westminster to Buckingham Palace through St. James. I highly recommend them!

3. Lots, and lots, and lots of shopping/looking. At least the exchange rate is a little better now, than it was back in February (simply because the pound and euro are struggling too). I picked up a few things for the kids...Mere loves Charile & Lola, and all the shops have cute stationery, stickers, etc. I love to browse through the very British & high-end Fortnum & Mason and Harrods (I could spend hours alone in the toy dept and children's clothing!).

4. I am currently completely caught up in the Outlander series (on 4 of 6...or is it 7). Did a little park bench reading on sunny afternoon.... dreaming of a large, kilting wearing Scot!

I just wanted to share a little happy today...this just drove the 4 year old over the moon when this arrived on the door step. We were BOO'D. A wonderful little Halloween treat bag arrived, filled with goodies for all of us...stickers, notepad, dish towel & pot holder, and jack o lantern votive holder. We need to put the BOO ghost in our window to show that we have already participated, and in the next two days BOO two more families (with no ghost in their window). great neighborhood fun!

7. banana laffy taffy has been a favorite since middle school

Which is so funny...because I just started hording halloween candy, got two bags of assorted laffy taffy, and promptly sat down and ate all the bananas...which unfortunately there were only about 5 of! The nerve...who really wants strawberry anyway! Well, I have a pretty strong sweet tooth, and most of the time I would pick chewy candy over chocolate...I love jelly belly jelly beans (but not all flavors...whose idea was buttered popcorn???). And tart and chewy it my real weekness. So, unless it is halloween or Easter, I don't keep it in the house!....Now, let me find a picture!

So I finally caught up on this weeks Gossip Girl last night, and I was most excited by the trailer for the new Confessions of a Shopaholic movie! I just love a little light fiction, and most Brit Chick Lit fits the bill...Sophie Kinsella, Jane Greene, etc. Apparently Isla Fisher is playing Becky Bloomwood...but I could have sworn it was Amy Adams ( I love her!!!)

A Date Night Concert

We saw a great show last night....the Avett Brothers. They are a local NC band just on the cusp of getting huge. My husband has seen them before, but this was my first show...they were great....lots of energy. It is hard to put them in a musical category...they have a guitar, banjo, bass & cello all jamming on stage. Alternative Country Rock or maybe Grunge Bluegrass? We went with friends, and had a great time. I would love to see them again. Here is a clip of one of my favorites...

Vacation

It is that time of year again....we will be making a grand, sweeping trip of the southeast....tomorrow we leave for Hot Springs, Ark., stopping in Nashville to spend the night along the way. We will spend the 4th of July weekend in Hot Springs with my parents and their oldest friends...we hope to see several aunts, uncles and cousins too.

Then down to Louisiana where the kids will get a little alone time with their grandparents while Kevin & I head to Mazatlan, Mexico to celebrate our 10th anniversary!

When we return, we have another 2 day car trip back to NC. WOW! I am exhausted just typing about it....I am off to throw more clothes in the wash & pack!

My brain hurts over my television choices this evening...do I watch Girls Just Want to Have Fun or Sixteen Candles??? Was Jake Ryan ever so dreamy or what? No one does a suburban Chicago , 80s, teen movie like John Hughes! I think I just might have to flip back & forth...and to keep Kevin happy, I notice Caddyshack is on too! Wow, this is a good night!

I actually don't have the before (way too embarrassing), but this is the after of the closet purge.

Here are the results....5 bags ready for Goodwill, one large bag of dry cleaning, a big pile of shirts to be sorted, laundered and ironed. And one very clean & empty closet floor!

This was months in the coming. I have been on a mental purge kick for a while now, but it takes me a while to take action. I am ready to tackle the office/bonus room next....which also includes a closet & walk-in attic. We will see where I go from there!

We do a whole lot of swinging at our house...and now that it is comfortably under 100 degrees (it is actually in the very pleasant 80s) we will be in the backyard even more.

I was told by this little girl last night that I was no longer needed...she could do the swinging all by herself. Now, I have been telling her this for months now...but it was great to hear her own confidence.

But I still have this little guy content to be push all day long!!!

Every time I have a good roll of blogging, something slows me down...just life in general this time...and a real nasty virus....of the computer variety. I was stuck sneaking in some quick computer time on my husband's laptop....and as Jill would say, it was a real groove buster!

But the PC is healthy, and I am back to reading blogs...and hopefully a little updating myself.

The little guy has been keeping me busy....We have been waiting for the right opportunity to make the move to the "big boy" bed. With no baby on its way, there was no rush, but I wanted to make sure it was the "right" time. He has been sleeping well lately, not fighting the nap so much...So this is what it looked like the other morning after he woke up (we had a few days of camera MIA....including the dismantling of the crib and first night in bed).

It is just crazy to walk past his room and see this bed there and not the crib. He really seems to like it...there have been no complaints. The first night went great. But this is what we found on the 2nd day of naptime in the bed.

It is hard to wake up in a good mood when you fall asleep like that.

I have been meaning to post about my Get Healthy Challenge. I was inspired by Rae to document my attempts at fitness, not so much weight loss...but who am I kidding, who wouldn't want to loose 5-10 lbs. I joined the gym about 6 weeks ago, and I am very proud of my routine. I can make it there at least 4 times a week...I have a good cardio workout on the tread mill, then a little weight training. My husband also joined, so we really encourage each other. He found a pod cast called "couch potato to 5K" in 2 months...helps a nonrunner become one. I just started week 3. Uses intervals of brisk walking to running to get you prepared. It is doable, yet still challenging for me. i am in a good groove right now....I hate to make a weight loss goal, for fear I do not meet it. So instead I just want to improve my cardio health (WALK UP STAIRS WITHOUT BEING WINDED) and fit into clothes that I fit into last summer...WHAT happened over the winter??? My 10 year anniversary beach trip in July and 15 year high school reunion in September are definitely apart of this plan. Cross your fingers!

I always use something like this when I go to the gym because I don't have "ponytail" hair. I wish they had them in little girl sizes too!

I have been checking out Lelly's SPT challenges for a while now, but I have never really posted...It is usually a few weeks after the fact that I even think of something. So here I am just one day late...not bad.

if this is your first earth day spt, do you consider yourself a part of "the green generation?"

I do consider myself part of the green generation. I feel that I am a pretty good recycler. We have one bin for paper and another for cans, glass & plastic bottles. We have always had weekly curb side recycling by the city.... such a huge help! And they have greatly increased the items accepted in the past few years. This is our paper bin after one week...I put everything in it...newspaper, cardboard, any packaging, cereal boxes, junk mail, catalogs, magazine,etc.

I am getting better reusing my shopping bags....I only seem to remember when I go to Trader Joe's and I grab my cooler bag from there...but I never remember when I pop into Super Target or Harris Teeter....so I am making that a goal. I will use the paper bags I have from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods until they wear out...and then pick up a few more cute reusable ones!

I have seen several of the Oprah shows lately on wasting, and the earth day special yesterday with Julia Roberts. I feel at times like the message of these programs is speaking directly to me....stop using so much plastic, read labels, cut the chemical use in your home, buy more organic, do you know what you are feeding your children???...I have all this information (misinformation???) spinning in my head, and I need to figure out what is best for our family. The issue of BPA in plastic is weighing on me right now...I have read some, but done nothing...I have A LOt of plastic cups, etc in this house....where do I begin and what do I replace it with??? I will struggle with this until I figure something out.

I think this was one of the easiest, most delicious things that I have ever made. But I shouldn't be surprised, because the Barefoot Contessa rarely disappoints. It all started when I saw this episode. We have a standing Friday night plan...Pizza with the Glovers. We met Sarah & Tyler 4.5 years ago in birthing class, and slowly became great friends. Our Meredith and their Jacob have been raised like brother and sister...and act accordingly...lots of love-hate! Our relationship with our entire birthing class is worthy of its own post another time.

I whole-hartedly feel that you shouldn't cook on Friday nights...ever...pizza, mexican,go out, stay in...but Friday nights are special. When the kids we pretty young we established a regular routine of meeting up at casual restaurants on Friday nights...but after just a few embarrassing meltdown episodes, we turned it into a order pizza in, toss up a salad, grab a bottle of wine, maybe fix a dessert Friday night dinner...we switch hosting duties back & forth. It has been great!...But back to Ina...I saw this episode one night and thought it would be great for a Friday. Every once in a while we get crazy and grill up fajitas, or make homemade pizza, etc.

I thought caesar club sandwiches would be super tasty, but it was the cupcakes that reeled me in...peanut butter and chocolate...a favorite of Kevin's. And they were amazing! To be honest, I just used a box mix to make the chocolate cupcakes....I mean who really needs to make cake from scratch? But this frosting was like heaven...try if for yourself!

Kathleen's Peanut Butter Icing:
1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/3 cup heavy cream

Place the confectioners' sugar, peanut butter, butter, vanilla, and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on medium-low speed until creamy, scraping down the bowl with a rubber spatula as you work. Add the cream and beat on high speed until the mixture is light and smooth.

This is a sad, sad little man here! The first time we put the nebulizer on in the doctors office, Meredith left the room because she couldn't handle the crying. But the promise of a cookie when we were done, and the ability to watch Blue's Clues makes the treatments at home much easier to handle. And scaling the treatments back to 2 times a day, rather than every 4 hours helps too! I hope it will all be over in a few days. Why do things like this happen when the husband is out of town? How do they know?

Catching up and Birthdays

So I am back ...well I have been for a while, but it has been difficult to sit down and write...I feel permanently tired, and trying to catch up on sleep...it's not working! It took a good week of being back to get back into the groove of things. It also takes about a week for the kids to go through "Nana detox"...to remember they do not get everything they ask for, there are not weekly trips to the Disney store for new "stuffies", all meals are not accompanied by whipped cream & sprinkles...the normal stuff. And in the mean time my baby has turned two!! Happy Birthday Daniel! We are 99% sure he is our last baby, and I think I treat him accordingly...I shutter at the thought of taking him out of the crib, but Meredith was out at 23 months( but I guess having another baby on the way had a bit to do with that). I constantly tell Kevin that Daniel is too young for things I know we did with Meredith at the same age...but he is my baby, he still likes cuddles and gives kisses on demand!

But along with his birthday came the TWOS! It happened exactly two days after his birthday...whines, demands, cries, and throwing....he has a serious problem where that is concerned. I remember with Meredith it took about three weeks for her TWO year old behavior to catch up with her...I remember the exact day. Here is the face Daniel was making most of last week...this is from is birthday party....but the good news is things have gotten better!
We had a great little CARS birthday party last Saturday with 6 two year old (and almost two year old) friends. The little man is addicted to CARS, and usually has 2 or 3 in his hand, along with his bunny "Bubba" at all times.

Kevin makes the birthday cakes in our family, and they are great. It seems odd for an IT guy, obsessed with every sport known to man, but he just kinda got into decorating cakes a few years ago...self-taught. I love it!

BTW...London was great. It was my first trip....and since I was tagging along on a business trip, I spent most of my days by myself. I definitely liked the time alone...at first. By Thursday I was over it. But what I really liked is that I had no agenda, no where I really had to be at any certain time. I hit all the big museums...British Museum, National Gallery, Victoria & Albert, Tate Modern. I have a fairly short attention span where galleries are concerned. It is usually best that I go on my own...Kevin can spend all day reading every little plaque. I like to browse, hit the one major exhibit, and move on....I love that all the museums were free!

I also did A LOT of window shopping! Blast the weak dollar, I bought just a few little treats for the kids. I loved walking along Regent Street & Oxford Street and recognizing all the shops that Trinny & Susannah frequent...Jigsaw, French Connection, Zara, Hobbs, Monsoon. And I am absolutely in love with the cutest little shop Cath Kidston...oh the fabrics were adorable, I loved the prints on the oil cloth! I took a trip to Knightsbridge to check out the famous Harrods & Harvey Nichols....lots of just looking there...but it was the food hall that made me truly drool! Ohhh so many things to taste...where to begin. It would have been much more fun to have a shopping buddy with me then.

London Is Calling

Swim Lessons

Today was our first swim lesson...and were we ever ready! Here is Meredith at 8:30 in the morning....our lesson was at 4:05....8 hours and counting!

She was so excited. We don't normal tell her about things until literally moments before they are supposed to happen because she gets to excited, worked up, impatient, etc! Trips to Grandmas are usually announced the day before for this very reason. Countdown calendars are regularly needed for the constant "Is today the day?????" Kevin & I regularly joke that in about 14 years, some August morning, we will look at Mere and say, "How about we go to college today?!"

TRY

When the kids are in the car with my husband, they never listen to kids music...and they seem to be ok with that. With me it is always Wiggles, 'Yardigans, Little People, etc. And Kevin has taken to coaching them on the classics...when a song comes on he'll say "Mere, this is Led Zeppelin" and she'll usually make some comment on whether or not she likes it. She has even gotten to the point where she has a few favorites that she requests on the ipod....so last night we were on our way to a friend's super bowl party and Meredith asked for the "Die" song. I was startled at first, but Kevin knew right away what she was asking for....and then I remembered the song also...by a great NC band, The Avett Brothers. I think she just likes the catchiness (is that a word?) of the chorus, but Kevin wanted to make sure she know what the song was about. This verse really got me to thinking. ...

So, explaining that to a 4 year was simple for him (he handles all major topics & sticky questions amazingly well). He said we have to try our hardest and do our best everyday (or that is the basic meaning...I think there is a whole woman did me wrong vibe too).

I like that, and I think I need to be reminded of that myself!

I have given a few moments of thought to having a word of the year. I always enjoyed reading about Kristi's "stretch", and how it kept evolving for her. So I sat in the car yesterday, listening to that song...

Holiday Recap 2

Ok, so now it is really post Holidays...

First we had my parents visit, and then Kevin's parent came. They actually overlapped for about 2 days...they actually get along very well...since Kevin & I were high school sweethearts they have known each other quite awhile ( almost 16 years???) and used to see each other socially quite a lot. My parents moved from that small town in Ohio 4 years ago back to our old hometown in Louisiana so we very seldom get to spend all this time together.

We all had a wonderful time. I never get enough pictures of the kids with grandparents...we stay kind of active, and I just forget to do it...how do the rest of you document thru photos so well???

Since two (yes myself included) got bikes from Santa for Christmas...we have been outside a lot...and thankfully North Carolina weather has cooperated. We actually have run the gamut since Christmas...30 to 70s....not a normal January.

I am still trying to clean up, recover, sort out and purge! (that last one stays on my to do list since I am a bit of a cluttery pack-rat) The very large local consignment sale took place last weekend, and forced me to get it together...I took about 4 wagon loads...not nearly enough. I found tons of summer clothes at the bottom of my forgotten ironing basket, and all sorts of things lurking in the walk-in attic...so I will make many more trips to goodwill,etc.

Holiday Recap

So I really thought I was going to be able to keep up at a nice weekly blogging rate...but traveling at Thanksgiving, a 4 year old (can you believe it!!!!) birthday party,

Christmas preparations, Christmas visitor preparations.....and now a VERy thorough closet cleaning (3 sweaters with large holes, what is causing it????) has derailed me. I am trying to remove everything from the closet, wash or dry clean it...then resort to storing sweaters in plastic tubs and hope that it works. Other suggestions??

And my parents are arriving Sunday...we are all so excited. Mere has actually started shaking at time when she talks about Christmas, Santa, Grandma & Papaw and Nana & Papa.

Just busy with the last minute tidying up. We usually have some sort of agenda of things to do, a few projects around the house. But there isn't much of that this time.

Here is a little something thing that I found that I thought would get me going...

Christmas Survey:

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper.

2. Real tree or artificial? I love the look and smell of real….but we used to be travel over Christmas so it made more sense to have a fake….and it is economical now that we have it.

3. When do you put up the tree? Usually the 1^st weekend in Dec…though I was ready right after Thanksgiving this year.

4. When do you take the tree down? Not until after new years…some times it is even a few weeks into January (you can do that with a fake tree)…but we do turn the lights off after new Years :)

5. Do you like eggnog? I really do..just a little bit…and I love an eggnog latte( ohh soo many calories)…oh and I always check the calendar for eggnog day at Goodberry's!

6. Favorite gift received as a child? This is hard…..

7. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, we started the willow tree set several years ago, and added each year until it was complete. The kids have the Little People set under the tree so they can play.

8. Hardest person to buy for? My parents….

9. Easiest person to buy for? My MIL, she likes girly stuff…jewelry, Vera, my sister –in-laws are easy too.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? hmmmm

11. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail, always, and NO printed photo cards without so much as a Merry Christmas written in your own handwriting…pet peeve!

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Too many, and I have seen a lot lately…it used to be A Christmas Story…but I have loved watching Polar Express with Meredith. I can't wait to watch Charlie Brown with her when she is old enough.

Good Mail

Yea! My Good Mail Labels came today! I saw on Jill's blog recently that you could purchase personalized Good Mail labels. I was so excited! I can accomplish basic paper crafts and computer projects....but I wasn't ready to make my own. They are so cute...and for being her very first customer, she included a set of notecards....which I love! Thank you Jill!

I also received a package of stationery today that I had ordered from Good Things. I placed an order for my mother-in-law for Christmas. I have put a good hit in my shopping, but I have still more to do. I like to have it done by Thanksgiving, so if we travel to Ohio to see family, I can take it with me. What becomes really overwhelming is the shear number of birthdays that we have have in the months of Nov. Dec. Jan. & Feb...sooooo many! I always feel so good about all the Christmas shopping that I've done....then I remember the birthdays! At least I am doing ok witht he kids so far.

Halloween & SPT

do you celebrate Halloween? do you go all out with costumes, or do you prefer to lay low with the porch light turned off? did you enjoy Halloween as a child? what was your favorite costume? will you dress up this year, or leave it for the little ones?

So I will be honest, Halloween is not my thing. I like a few little decorations (more the "fall" look). I am content to hand out candy while my husband takes the kids around. I don't remember at what age I stopped wanting to dress up, but I don't really ever remember loving it. By my early 20s I recall dreading Halloween parties...I hated thinking of a creative, unique costume. I think I really dislike drawing attention to myself, and I admit I care too much what other people think (I am working on this). The weird thing is that my husband loves it all...and I think that as the kids get older, he'll get even more excited about their costumes.

SPT - Black & White

Is it really easier to see your "true colors" when the photo is black & white? what do you see?

Maybe this isn't the best B&W photo for this challenge....but it is the most recent. We were in Chicago visiting my sister & her family in over Labor Day weekend. We had a lot of photos done of all the cousins together for our parents.

We also did a few of individuals & families. This one up top is of Mere & I. I am much better in candids....especially when I am NOT looking at the camera...all sorts of weird things tend to happen with my face then....I might post later to illustrate....but I might not!

Rainy Day

So we are on day 6 of "Daddy Gone" week. And we're actually doing ok. This is the first morning that no one has gymnastics, tumbling or pre-school, so we are just relaxing. It is 9 am, and we all still have our jammies on. At this rate, I am not sure what we'll get done today....but that's ok with me! It is a rainy day.....a true rarity here in NC, so we need to find an indoor activity....but that trip to Costco that I have in mind might not be exactly what Mere wants to do.

She is working here in a workbook that we picked up at the teacher store last week. One of our favorite place to go...because it is such a great toy store. Mere isn't really interested in writing/identifying letters right now (unless of course it is her idea), so I picked up this pre-writing book. She enjoys outlining shapes, squiggles, and practicing pencil control. I thought it was a good start. And Daniel likes to color! He went to the cupboard to ask for the book & crayons this morning!!!

Daddy should be home tonight right about bedtime....keep your fingers crossed!

Manners...we work at this regularly. We have great periods of several months when the pleases and thank yous flow freely....then there are the times where it is like pulling teeth!

This morning while Meredith was trying to get around Kevin on the steps and was prompted for "good manners" she says "I would like you to not be in my way, please!" Where have we gone wrong??? Three and a half is such a unique animal.

Ok....it has been awhile. But I have not given up. I am just not sure if I am the blogging type. It is not going to be an everyday thing for me....but I will try again. I am on a purging kick! And with good reason...we are the cluttery, keeping type, and we need to stop. I have a boat load of clothes sitting in the hall way ready to take to a big consignment sale tonight. Since both my sister, and sister-in-law just had their 3rd and 2nd boy(respectively), I am no longer saving Meredith's clothes. I still have tons of the 0-12 stuff...there is just so much of it that it is overwhelming. But I feel good getting rid of all the old fall/winter stuff. Tonight I hope to get the rest of the summer/pajamas but in the right place, and then I can start a new project! ???? We'll see!

SPT challenge - it's as american as apple pie

Here is my first SPT (self portrait tuesday) post....just a few days late. Thank you to Lelly for supplying the inspiration for these!!... So wikipedia defines Americana as....

Americana refers to artifacts of the culture of the United States, the history and folklore resultant from its westward expansion. Examples of this culture include baseball, apple pie, Superman, the Diner, barbed wire, wagon trains, and NASCAR; jazz, the music of Stephen Foster, George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, the music of Aaron Copland (notably his Fanfare for the Common Man), and rockabilly; and American art, such as that of Frederic Remington, Grant Wood, and Norman Rockwell, all based on American folk art.

So in my former life I was a US History teacher....I live for Americana. I love the symbols of the development of the country. This definition does so much to extol the virtues of Americana. I used to surround myself with it when I decorated my classroom...but I have never really decorated the house that way. I think the term "Americana" has a very "country" stigma when you think about home decor...but when you think about the above description, it is not necessarily so....on to my picture.

This was my grandmother's, my dad's mom, Mama Newton. I don't remember it from her home, but somewhere along the way, it ended up at my parent's house. I was always drawn to it...the utilitarian simplicity of it. As my parents began to downsize a bit, they delivered it to us one visit. I just have it tucked behind a chair in the living room...a little too close to the playroom actually. It regularly catches the stray matchbox car or little people farm animal. But it feels at home...

Yesterday was a first for us...the dance recital. I was a little concerned...wasn't sure if Mere would be dancing, or sitting in my lap like the preschool music concert. She actually went in there ready to dance, feet moving! But her enthusiasm slowly waned, and by the tap performance, she was doing a little shuffle just in front of me. We'll be taking a break from dance/gymnastics this summer. We might take the same class again in the fall....we'll see what is available. It will be nice to have Monday nights free...actually now we have all our nights free...hockey is over, bells are over, and now dance too! Yahoo!
